Basic History of the Tourist Area

In 1923, the fortress began to be viewed as a cultural monument – the Club of Czech Tourists opened the first underground tour in Josefov. Later, a contact point was established in the city’s bookstore, where it was possible to order a tour. This is how it worked until everything began to be organized by the Municipal Museum in Jaroměř (from the 1980s to 2012).

Since 2012, the management of tours has been reorganized and moved under the City of Jaroměř. A year later, the ticket office and tourist facilities were relocated to Bastion No. I.

The Středisko Pevnost Josefov (part of MKS Jaroměř) manages Bastion No. I and other parts of the fortress since 2016. We provide tourist guiding and information services. We manage a wide range of activities, including promoting the whole fortified city, organizing classic tours and special programs, cooperation with other organizations involved in tourism, and preparing cultural events and public exhibitions.
