The tour is always with a tourist guide, usually speaking in Czech. It begins in the courtyard of Bastion No. I. You can pick up a text guide in your language at the cash point desk to understand the tour’s content. The text guides are available in the following languages:
ENGLISH – GERMAN – POLISH – DUTCH – RUSSIAN
It is also possible to book a tour with an English-speaking guide.
The tour usually lasts 60 minutes and includes visitation of casemates used to house troops during the war and a highly complex underground defense system. During this adventurous trip, the guide in a historical costume will show you many interesting places related to the history of Josefov.
In Bastion No 1, you can buy not just the tickets but also some souvenirs. There is a relaxing room with a vending machine for small snacks. Toilets are nearby.
FOR FREE:
In Bastion No. I, there is always an introductory exhibition about the history of Josefov. In addition, you can visit for free the M. B. Braun lapidary with original baroque sculptures or run up to the main rampart and admire the view.
Please note that the temperature in the underground is around 10 °C (50 °F). We, therefore, recommend packing at least one extra layer of clothing.
Animals have always been a part of everyday life in the fortress. On the other hand, please consider other visitors and staff of the tourist area. Therefore, only smaller dogs that you can carry in your arms or in your bag are allowed to take part in the tour. Thank you for your understanding.
Claustrophobia is an unpleasant thing. Approximately 5% of people worldwide suffer from it. Therefore, consider whether entering the underground will be comfortable for you. You will visit corridors which are most of the time 3 meters high, but it will also be necessary to go through a 175 cm high corridor. At the same time, it is encouraging to hear from visitors returning from the tour with a smile on their faces: “We did it!”
Cyclists are more than welcomed in Josefov. The 1300 km long Elbe river cycle route leads through the fortress. Spaces for bikes are available. Motorcyclists can park their machines in the courtyard of Bastion No. I. You can leave your helmets and luggage at the cash point desk.
Visiting the above-ground parts of the area (lapidarium, casemates, courtyard) is wheelchair accessible.
Wheelchair users can also visit the underground as it has a flat floor. The staff will provide additional information on the spot. The key to the barrier-free toilet is available at the cash desk.
